Writing & Media

A growing record of the inquiry

The ideas on this website develop through several forms. Books allow a long argument to accumulate. Papers make particular concepts more precise. Essays test and extend emerging lines of thought. Talks and videos provide another way to work through the questions in public.

This page brings those forms together and shows how they connect to the larger inquiry.

Formal Papers & Research

Developing concepts with greater precision

Formal papers provide a place to define emerging constructs, distinguish them from adjacent ideas, and make the reasoning available for closer examination.

Featured Paper

What Is Adaptive Capacity?

A complex adaptive systems framework for organizational intelligence, coherent action, and practical diagnosis
Conceptual Paper · Version 6.0 · July 2026

Adaptive Capacity is developed here as an emergent, configurational property of complex social systems rather than a synonym for agility, resilience, innovation, speed, or learning.

The paper examines how organizations recognize material change, integrate distributed knowledge, coordinate action and responsibility, and alter their capabilities through retained learning. It organizes the framework across the Mechanics of Structure, Mechanics of Movement, Integrative Capacity, and Dynamics of Evolution.

Essays & Notes

Shorter arguments and developing thought

Not every question requires a formal paper.

Essays and notes allow the work to respond more quickly to organizational events, leadership questions, technological change, and patterns that illuminate how coordination succeeds, adapts, fragments, or loses coherence under complexity.

Full essays are published on Substack. The website curates selected pieces with a short original introduction and their relationship to the Ideas, rather than reproducing the complete article.

Talks & Media

Working through the ideas in another medium

Some arguments become clearer when spoken, diagrammed, or developed conversationally.

The YouTube channel Leadership for the Network Age contains talks, explanations, and other material that extend the written work and make parts of the inquiry accessible in a different form.

One Body of Work

Different formats, one inquiry

Books, papers, essays, and media are not separate brands or content streams. They are different ways of developing the same set of questions.

Wherever possible, each work points back to the Ideas it develops, challenges, or extends. The website makes those relationships visible so a reader can move from a short essay to a concept, from a concept to a paper, or from a paper to the larger argument without losing orientation.
