Formal papers provide a place to define emerging constructs, distinguish them from adjacent ideas, and make the reasoning available for closer examination.
Adaptive Capacity is developed here as an emergent, configurational property of complex social systems rather than a synonym for agility, resilience, innovation, speed, or learning.
The paper examines how organizations remain intelligently related to changing reality by recognizing material change, integrating distributed knowledge, coordinating responsibility and action, and reconfiguring capabilities through retained learning.
